One of the hottest snacks in recent years has been veggie jerky. Although a bit on the pricey side, it is delicious and healthy all at once. There are many different varieties available, but perhaps my favorite is vegan veggie jerky. Unlike your average beef or pork product, this is a far superior alternative. This article will look at making Vegemite Jerky and why you should make it instead of your average cow jerky snack.
The first thing you might notice is that veggie jerky, unlike most jerky products, doesn’t have a red color. The reason for this is that it is made from beet pulp, and so it contains no salt or other flavorings, which can make meat taste bland. There are many varieties available. However, I prefer to make a ‘beet to beet’ mix, spiced up with some pepper and herbs. In terms of flavor, there are a few options. I typically like a tangy red chili flavor. However, you can add cumin, garlic, or herbs.
There are other options for your veggie jerky flavour, including soy sauce and a variety of herbs such as Rosemary, thyme and oregano. A nice choice would be to add some soy sauce to the mix as well as some chopped tomatoes and onions. I am of the mind that tomatoes and onions provide a decent amount of ‘bodied’ flavour to the mix. Be careful though not to add too much soy sauce or else it will overpower the other ingredients. If you want some interesting flavours, try adding carrot or apple cider vinegar.
The other ingredient that distinguishes Vegemite jerky from your average beef jerky is the brand of meat. Most beef jerky in stores is made from sirloin, which is the cheapest meat. However, veggie jerky can also be made from venison, veal, turkey and even fish. The flavours available are therefore endless. So if you’re looking for something more unusual or more adventurous, why not try something different?
While I am certain that veggie jerky tastes good, I am not a huge fan of Australian beef jerky. My favourite snack foods are oats, wheat bread and potatoes. While these foods do not always contain the protein that you need to maintain good health, they certainly taste great. So, if you are looking for a healthier snack option and are unable to go on a diet to achieve it, then give both coffee jerky and Vegemite jerky a try!
A nice thing about both of these snack foods is that they are both very cheap to buy. Whereas some (notably Starbucks) have limited options on the types of beef they sell, both beans and Vegemite are easily found and relatively inexpensive. This makes them excellent economical gifts. They also pack quite a wallop of flavour. If you like your beef really well it might be worth trying both varieties; I won’t tell you what the difference is!
So while I would definitely advise any bean lover in search of the best beef jerky Australia to give either one a go. As a non-beef lover myself, I can certainly vouch for their flavour and health benefits. For me, the difference between Vegemite and coffee jerky couldn’t be any greater.
